Mike Moore Visits Seattle

Mike Moore, new Director General of the World Trade Organization, paid a one-day visit to Seattle on October 1.  He got a sense of what life may be like on his next visit when he arrives for the Seattle WTO ministerial November 30 –December 3. At the same time, Seattle got a sense of the WTO’s new leader.

Mike Moore comes from New Zealand where he left school at age 15 and worked as a meat worker, construction worker, printer and social worker.

He entered his country's Parliament in 1972 as the youngest member ever elected.  He was the longest serving member of the New Zealand Parliamentary Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade.

During his many years of public service, Mr. Moore served as New Zealand Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing (1984-1990), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1990), Deputy Minister of Finance (1988-1990), and Prime Minister (1990).

Mr. Moore has held a number of positions in various community groups. Self educated, with an interest in social history, he has written eight books including "A Pacific Parliament", "Hard Labour" and "A Brief History of the Future".

Mike Moore took up his appointment as Director General of the WTO on 1 September.
