The WTO Ministerial brought to the fore issues of poverty, development and sustainability as they relate to trade. It also stimulated further discussions within the business community on corporate responsibility in the global community. While the following articles do not necessarily represent the position of the Council, we offer them here because we believe they have some contribution to make to this essential dialogue.

William McDonough, internationally known architect, argues that the concept of sustainability does not go far enough, and promotes the concept of  "eco-effectiveness," which designs with materials that give back to the planet more than they consume. Fifteen years ago he launched a new green movement in the architectural world that continues today with his green design for the Environmental Defense Fund in New York City.

World United Nations Environmental Programme, GEO-2000 presents an overview of  its environmental outlook and and policy recommendations for reducing threats to the environment.  GEO-2000 Outlook and Recommendations.

World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn spoke at UNCTAD's Tenth global meeting in Bankok, Thailand in February, 2000.  He focused his remarks on the need to change the approach to development and to better incorporate developing nations into the benefits of trade liberalization.   "Rethinking Development — Challenges and Opportunities"
